– w dolinie Wilgi.

Kozice wraz z państwem polskim przeżywają w ciągu wieków okresy prosperity i upadku.

Niestety w następnych wiekach –XVI i XVII sytuacja chłopów ulegała stopniowo znacznemu pogorszeniu.

Pierwsza wzmianka o Kozicach pojawia się w dokumencie biskupa krakowskiego, sławnego Zbigniewa Oleśnickiego z 1447 roku, gdzie zapisano istnienie wsi Koszicze w parafii Korytnica. Rejestry  starostwa radomskiego z 1507 i 1523 roku , do którego należała Ziemia Stężycka, zaliczają  Kozice wraz z m.in. Życzynem i Wolą Życzyńską do dóbr królewskich w Ziemi Stężyckiej.

Według inwentarza starostwa stężyckiego z 15 grudnia 1580 roku, do dóbr tego starostwa należały m.in. Kozice z młynem Świstawka, Życzyn z 2 młynami i Wola Życzyńska [obecnie Wola Życka]. W miarę przybywania ludzi w okolicy Stężycy rozrastała się administracja. Kozice w  XVI wieku zostały dołączone do dzierżawy Ryki (wieś założona w XV wieku,  później niż Kozice), która od 1607 roku zyskała status tzw. tenuty czyli starostwa niegrodowego. Życzyn natomiast stał się osobną dzierżawą w ramach tenuty ryckiej,  w której skład wchodziły m.in. Kozice z przypisanym sołtystwem i młynem Świstawka.

Kozice-historia-obraz5

Obraz 5. Lustracja dóbr królewskich województwa sandomierskiego (reprint), strona 228 z opisem wsi Kozice

W owym czasie  dzierżawę życzyńską ostatecznie odjęto od tenuty ryckiej,  lustrator  w 1661 roku używa terminu a tenuta Rycensis avulsa we wstępie do opisu Kozic.   Kozice nadal należały do dzierżawy życzyńskiej.

Duży folwark i dobra były następnie we władaniu rozmaitych rodzin; w II połowie XIX wieku wzniesiono tu ładny dwór na podobieństwo nieregularnej willi włoskiej, zwieńczonej czworokątną wieżyczką umożliwiającą obserwację okolicy.

Do sprzętu zbóż musiała wystarczyć kosa, a często nawet sierp.

Dotychczasowi chłopi, dysponenci gruntów bez prawa do własności  dostali uroczyste akty uwłaszczenia.

Pierwszym prezesem i sekretarzem OSP został Mikołaj Kozioł [13].

Mimo to uboga społeczność wiejska podejmowała próby wsparcia wybranych gospodarzy np. co roku posyłano  jednego chłopa do szkoły rolniczej w Miętnem koło powiatowego miasta Garwolin.

W okresie międzywojennym przybywało ludzi, problemem tamtej Polski było przeludnienie wsi. Według spisu powszechnego z 1921 roku wieś Kozice w gminie Trojanów liczyła 103 domy mieszkalne i 575 mieszkańców.

C w dniu 10 lutego). W tych dniach szalała 3-dniowa burza śnieżna, zaspy dochodziły do 4 metrów wysokości. Dnia 23 sierpnia 1930 nad Kozicami i okolicą przeszła wyjątkowo gwałtowna burza, która zniszczyła bądź uszkodziła wiele budynków, powaliła tysiące drzew, przewracała ludzi i zwierzęta.

W powszechnym użyciu były motyki  do wykopu ziemniaków i cepy do omłotów zboża.

Oto przykłady: zamiast a jakże słyszało się a juści, zamiast stała – stojała, zamiast chyba – musi, zamiast skwareczki – skworecki, zamiast chodź no – chodzino, zamiast oni mówili – łuny mówiły, zamiast pokaż-pokos, zamiast piach-pjoch.

W 1964 roku w Kozicach mieszkało 489 mieszkańców, a sześć lat późnej 443 osoby w 110 gospodarstwach, w 2004 roku liczba mieszkańców skurczyła się do 403 osób.

W tamtych latach ukuto termin określający nową grupę ludzi – chłoporobotnicy, którzy łączyli pracę na roli z zatrudnieniem w miastach w różnej formie i proporcji.

W Kozicach powstało jednak wiele murowanych domów mieszkalnych i gospodarczych.

Rok 1989 i lata następne to czas transformacji ustrojowej, okres wielkich zmian w polskim przemyśle i rolnictwie. Inni, odważni i wykształceni, powiększali swoje gospodarstwa i korzystali z okresów dobrej koniunktury gospodarczej. Państwowe Gospodarstwo Rolne w sąsiedniej wsi Trojanów upadło, gdyż koszty produkcji żywności przewyższały uzyskiwane dochody.

Kozice-historia-obraz8

Obraz 8.

Początek obecnego stulecia przyniósł rewolucyjne zmiany związane z wejściem Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Hotel Talaria w Trojanowie).

Teraz można z Warszawy dojechać do Kozic w czasie około 1 godziny.

Jeszcze 60 lat temu w czasie niedzielnych mszy świętych stały przed kościołem konie zaprzężone do furmanek.

Chcę jednak optymistycznie zakończyć moją historię –siedemset kozickich lat obfitowało w przeróżne dramaty i zakręty dziejowe. Dominujący, zasadniczy kierunek naszej zbiorowej drogi życiowej prowadzi jednak do zdecydowanej poprawy jakości i długości naszego życia. W ciągu 500 lat było to 1024*1024, zaś w ciągu 700 lat daje to niewyobrażalnie wielką liczbę 1024*1024*256 czyli w ciągu siedmiuset lat ponad 256 milionów ludzi brało udział w tworzeniu naszych skłonności, charakterów, siły, talentów.

Chapter I

A short, concise Introduction into a serious history subject –impatient readers may limit the reading to the Introduction.

MY KOZICE

(literal translation)

Not a few horny goats

Hammered the soil with their hoofs

Hence, maybe the name was coined

Kozice for my place on Earth

[kozice in Polish means goats, or more closely mountain goats]

This short piece of poetry focuses our thoughts on the past and certainly on the distant past of centuries ago. Each child has a mother and father as well as a granny and a grandpa. At a time when people could not read or write, their parents and grandparents were the major source of their knowledge of the past. They safeguarded memories of the most important occurrences in their family’s neighborhood.  However, it was hard to collect the memory of the grandparents. Thanks to laborious efforts of chroniclers, royal officials, and parish record writers, we may have much deeper insight into the past of our ancestors. A deep truth arises from the stories and the documents – harsh conditions of living made people look for a communal life. Humans needed other humans nearby because people had a feeling of being at the mercy of the Almighty. As our grand 16th century poet Jan Kochanowski put it, they considered themselves to be hopelessly frail and weak.

It may so happen that whims of fate will drive you to the area near Kozice which has its history like any place on Earth. Now, let us imagine you set foot in the ancient village Kozice, now placed at the border of three provinces of Poland: Mazovia, Podlasie, and Lublin Lands. But, centuries ago it was a part of Małopolska (with Cracow as a province capital) and more closely in the administrative district of Stężyca or in Ziemia Stężycka. There were a couple of name variants for the village: Koszice, Kozycze, Kozyce or Koziny and maybe there is a grain of truth in that it is connected with the abundance of the horny animals, the goats. This village was included in the royal properties volume, unlike neighboring private Trojanów so that its peasants could be more effectively protected against abuse from such property holders.

Let us extend our imagination and try to see what was happening six centuries ago. Poland is ruled by a smart king Casimir, the last king of the Piast royal dynasty. Medieval Poland experiences probably the first economic miracle in its history. New villages and towns are founded; the population is on a dynamic increase; the devastating Tartar raids ceased; the Lithuanians are still dangerous, but their aggression against the Polish state will soon stop. The local stronghold Stężyca on Wisla rises because of proximity to Poland’s grand river. The river port is built here for transporting the grain to Gdańsk located on the Baltic seaside and consequently for its profitable export to other European countries. The local soils are not overly fertile but it is compensated by the products to be retrieved from the vast forest, full of animals, wild bees, various fruit and mushrooms. The village was founded near the charming river Okrzejka.

Okrzejka, with its length of 70 kilometers, is abundant in an impressive number of trees and bushes along its banks. The river is rambling, and its slopes are good for building water-mills, fulling-mills and saw mills. Its overflow-arms are used for arranging the ponds for fish cultivation, because fish was a natural enrichment of the poor daily diet and was readily eaten at the long fasting periods.

The source of Okrzejka can be found in the Podlasie province, on the wet meadows near Wola Okrzejska where our outstanding novelist, the Nobel prize winner, Henryk Sienkiewicz, was born. He must have been impressed by his birthplace surroundings and he mentioned them with discretion in his famous historical novel ‘The Trilogy’. In one of his other novels, Henryk Sienkiewicz introduces the figure of the famous, undefeated knight Powała of Taczew of the Ogończyk coat of arms who was reputed to be the first owner of a little defense castle in Trojanów. After centuries, this much changed structure has been turned into the elegant hotel Talaria Ladies Spa, located in Trojanów, as ancient a place as Kozice  and  now a local administration village. The river ends up near Maciejowice rendering its waters to the Wisla.

People lived here prior to us and, after us, some other people will probably decide to live here. We are just one tiny link in long chain of human existence.

What does Kozice offer to you? In the first place, enjoy the natural, rural landscape, not spoiled by civilization. The countryside is broad but not rich, it is just a typical countryside in central Poland. There are no towns here, just villages. The place, offering scenic landscape centered upon a little river called Okrzejka, is a lovely location with fragrant forest of a definite pine majority; whereas here or there, one could encounter the birch scrubs or powerful individual oaks.  Spacious natural meadows on the river bank which knew nothing like the pre-war land reclamation, still produce a charming ocean of bloom. Frequent grinding-mills down the river add to the serene landscape along with the river branches full of fish and frogs – all the components contribute to an idyllic image of dreamy peace, innocent harmony. The monotony of the Mazovian planes is broken by the moraine heights with their winding web of dirt roads leading to individual farms hidden in the woods or in the valleys.

The oldest existing, somewhat mysterious, local structure erected by a human in Kozice is a former cross–now a pillar made of larch timber because the transverse arm fell off once, whipped by thousands of gales and stormy winds. According to information included in the chronicle of the primary school in Kozice, run by its headmaster Mikołaj Kozioł, this structure is almost 500 years old. There is an old story saying that a Gypsy caravan passed by this place and a sick daughter of the Gypsy king died and was buried under the cross. The cross is now placed by the dirt road between Kozice and Piotrówek.

Another much younger and curious  structure erected in 1917 can be found by the scenic route, in the woods, between Kozice and the parish church in Korytnica. It was built to memorialize the victims and to bless the survivors of the terrible plague, which decimated people across the globe. The date engraved in the granite rock makes us believe that it was the unforgettable Spanish Flu. Now, we can hardly find any other really old structures because they were made of wood which normally cannot be preserved properly to survive through the centuries. One of them was the really old water-mill on the river at the border between Kozice and Mika. This building collapsed recently.  Shortly after the WWII, it was used to make flour by grinding the grain collected from the local fields. Earlier, next to the mill, there was another structure called a “fulling-mill” which was driven by the water current and used for producing woolen cloth. The water-mill, or rather its former predecessor, was mentioned in one really old document in  the 16th century royal tax inspection report [7]. There are still several old and sometimes well-kept wooden houses, but they are now mostly roofed with ugly and even harmful asbestos tiles. Moreover, the royal inspectors mentioned six inns in Kozice in the old document, but currently no one has any clue about them.

This is the end of the Introduction and the beginning of the reading for those of you who are hungry to know more on the subject…

Chapter II

Now, I am going to present information on the ancient times when a human appeared  by chance in the area near Kozice

Kozice-historia-obraz2

Fig. 2. A current map of the Kozice neighborhood, showing the local communes Trojanów, Kłoczew, Stężyca, Ryki, Sobolew, Maciejowice

This work is devoted to the past of a tiny dot on Earth, which is not an isolated island but is a region, a surrounding subjected to the rolling of former and future gales of history which can be both natural or human-induced occurrences. Kozice is a village located in the Trojanów commune, in the county of Garwolin, in the Mazovia Provincial Administration of Rzeczpospolita Polska (the Republic of Poland) and its history is much longer than human settlement in these lands.

When venturing to write a history of a given region, one would like to indicate its very beginning. It is an almost unachievable task because there had been another less studied period;  therefore, we are moving in a thicker and thicker fog of the past.

The lands of contemporary Poland surely have varied much through hundreds of thousands of years. These lands were relatively lately infiltrated by small groups of primitive men; it took place in the Late Pleistocene Age (230 000 years ago) and, in particular, they were coming during the great Mazovian Interglacial Age, 230000-190000 years ago  [1].

At that time, a mild climate prevailed in what is the territory of contemporary Poland, with average yearly temperatures around 10 deg. C (50 deg. F). One should have in mind that the climate of those times featured three glacial periods of different ranges, forcing  people to migrate in order to look for food. Hunting and foraging was the basis of human existence, and those primitive people used quite simple tools of stone. The oldest glaciation covered almost all territory of present Poland – the continental glacier was stopped by the high Carpathian mountains in the south. Kozice and its neighborhood was surely under ice. The continental glacier, which is a giant volume of ice forming even at sea level, sculptured fantastic glacial forms. The shape, the range and the thickness of the glacier were subjected to dynamic changes with the phase of expansion, stagnation and retraction of the ice mass. The local thickness of the continental glacier which slipped from Scandinavia was over 1 kilometer (0,6 mile)! The later Middle Poland Glaciation (Second Glaciation) also reached Kozice area, then the giant ice mass was pushed south along the bed of river Vistula, between two regions Malopolska and Lublin Highlands. The territory near Kozice, known as “smaller region” (mesoregion), – Żelechów Highland, was subjected to a part of this Second Glaciation,  called Warta Glaciation. The possible result of the giant ice mass action and the glacier bed mass (being under enormous pressure of ice volume) was today’s hill overgrown by pine wood and called Czubatka [Crest] by the locals. It was raised by  heaps of ice movements; such form is called terminal moraine. We may guess that prior to the continental glacier appearance, the terrain was more creased and powerful.  The dynamic action of the glacier resulted in so- called denudation – the whole of the erosion processes resulting in flattening and lowering of the terrain.

The third glaciation called Northern Poland Glaciation reached Tuchola Forest and Masurian Lake district in the northern part of Poland. This did not reach the Żelechów Highland. It is hard to believe that the most intensive ice accumulation took place just 20 thousand years ago, and the whole Scandinavian continental glacier vanished merely 11 thousand years ago.

Kozice is located in the south–western part of the Żelechów Highland, near the Intervale of Middle Wisla. This area is a borderland between three larger of Poland’s provinces: Mazovia, Podlasie and Lublin Highlands. The Żelechów Highland is composed of flat and rolling areas with moraines and dunes. In the north, near Stoczek Łukowski, the terminal moraines of so-called Warta Glaciation Period, which bis a part of the Middle Poland Glaciation, reach the height of 204 meters above sea level. During the continental glacier retraction in the Warta Glaciation sub-stage, the proglacial stream valleys were formed for the rivers flowing through this territory: Świder, Wilga and Okrzejka which cut through the clay deposit of older glaciations. The glacier bottom melted due to enormous pressure of the ice mass. Water sculptured those proglacial stream valleys which were wide but not too deep formations, carrying waters in the direction of the land slopes, mostly in the western direction. The lowest heights of this Highland are about 130 m above sea level. The highest places of the Żelechów Highland may be encountered in the vicinity of Sokola, not far from the spring of the river Okrzejka (206 m above sea level). The valleys which were originally deep and, then, wide and shallow, were filled with drift including gravel and sand carried during the Warta Glaciation sub-stage. Later, sands accumulated at the Wisla Glaciation sub-stage, and the organic peat which was formed in the Holocene time (Holocene is a geological era running from the last glaciation until now). The Żelechów Highland borders the Łuków Flatland in the east, along the settlements: DomaniceJedlankaKrzywdaAdamówSerokomlaKock. The eastern line of the Żelechów Highland is an outwash zone (outwash is a rock material consisting of sand and gravel, formed during the continental glacier retraction in  the Warta glaciation sub-stage). Some portions of the outwash sands have been shaped as dunes [2].

Fig. 3. The aerial image of the Kozice neighborhood , taken by the author in 2008. It could be a view of the ancient wilderness, before a human set his foot here.

The above description is similar to a scientific evaluation but the question is how an ordinary tourist perceives these lands? The author is sure that the neighborhood of Kozice may beguile visitors with a number of charms. The relative abundance of woods is the first clearly visible thing. They encircle the village and they even grow in some parts of it.  The visitor who will stay here for a while and spend a night here, will surely notice that his/her sleep was rather sound. The next day he/she will be kind of dazed by the air which is full of life-promoting oxygen. In the north, behind the river Okrzejka, one can admire beautiful woods full of various tree and bush species with abundant brushwood. In the south there are vast woods extending towards the railway station Życzyn. In the eastern part of the village, there is a smaller woods called Zwierzyniec at the foot of which dead animals were buried (hence the name Zwierzyniec which means “of animals”). Further, in the distant south east quarter, there is the Baczanka Woods (also known under the name Kapuśniak) which is much different from the other woods-occupied areas. These woods grow on the most fertile soil in the neighborhood. Nowadays, these remnants of ancient forests may give us an impression about how enormous a wilderness must have dominated this area thousands years ago.

A little rambling river Okrzejka is a true treasure of the Kozice neighborhood; it begins its course in the vicinity of Wola Okrzejska, a birthplace of the famous 19th/20th century novelist, Nobel prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz.  Okrzejka yields its waters to Wisla near Maciejowice – a significant place known by every Pole – where a great battle took place in 1794. It was unsuccessful for the Polish army trying to stop the invading Russians troops. A bitter consequence of this lost fight was the end of Poland’s independence for a long 123 years. The river meanders in a scenic way through meadows and woods, feeding local ponds, and for centuries known for the fish-culture. The river has been wild sometimes and it sculptured its new bed here or there, leaving lovely backwaters or little ponds. The river course near Wola Życka and Jabłonowiec is especially scenic, no wonder that the holiday resort on water was built here five decades ago. The river bed is sloped enough to allow multiple water mills to be erected along its course (Kłoczew, Janopol, Wylezin, Kozice, Życzyn, Jabłonowiec, etc.). This little river is big enough to have its own tributaries: Korytka, Swarzyna , Ownia. The village Kozice, located on Okrzejka, is distributed over the land with considerable variation of height above sea level, ranging from 132 m near the river to 182 m in the Baczanka Wood, which adds to the neighborhood charm.

The history of early settlements in the Ziemia Stężycka is overshadowed with a mysterious veil;  so, I am going to describe the region rather than the current territory of the village.

One thing is sure – people who tried to settle down on the occupied area were most often anxious about an uncertain future.  There were plenty of dangers, beginning with natural elements like water, fire, drought, plague air, swarming insects and the incursion of ever hungry birds. Polish soils are not fertile enough so that colonization progressed slowly, taking centuries. We can see only a couple of strongholds to the east of Wisła on the map of early Poland (10th-11th century; Płock was one of them). Poland was scarcely populated; it is estimated that the Poland’s population around the year 1000 was only 1 million.

The boundless wilderness intersected by the rivers here or there definitely dominated the landscape of the Kozice neighborhood. The sandy soil was not suitable for agriculture; so, the early settlers selected the areas of sloped valleys or the land near the rivers where there was fertile mud deposits. Then, the settlers moved deeper into the forest, clearing the area by setting fires. Quite simple instruments were in use like primitive butting ploughs which were moved by yoking oxen or even by people. It was extremely hard manual labor, often beyond human strength so that people kept dying early.

Chapter III

I am going to explain why Ziemia Stężycka (District of Stężyca) was being populated so slowly and when it accelerated more quickly.

The first place of settlement in this area was the stronghold Sieciechów (the name is derived from the powerful magnate called Sieciech, who was once next in line to the Polish duke Władysław Herman). Now, it is just a village located on the left bank of Wisła. Centuries ago (11th-14th century period), it was probably placed on the right bank like Stężyca and another larger river Wieprz that flowed into Wisla near Sieciechów. Unfortunately, due to destructive river pressure, its significance decreased to the advantage of Steżyca which was located a little downstream on the Wisla turn. The economic significance of Stężyca radiated north, and it once resulted in naming this territory Ziemia Stężycka (County of Stężyca – see the map below). The first settlements in this area were Korytnica and Żelechów. The diocese of Cracow was the church administration center for Ziemia  Stężycka. This county existed as a self-standing territorial unit in the period of 15th-18th century and, later, at the turn of 18th century, its area spread between three counties: Garwolin, Łuków and Puławy [3].

At that time, the basic grain types – like millet, wheat, barley, rye or oat   were not yet known. The peasants knew how to cultivate hemp, broad beans, cucumbers, lentils, peas or turnips, very common at that time. It is interesting that people knew the secret of growing fruit-bearing trees like various cultivars of apples, pears, plums, cherries and even wine grapes [1].

Unfortunately, the plants in the fields were threatened by heavy rains or droughts and occasionally suffered much from plagues of voracious insects or rodents.

Still the raids of aggressive tribes: Yatzwings, Lithuanians, or hair-raising Tartars posed the most dangerous threat. There are records of ruthless Yatzwing invasions on the Łuków Land, Ziemia Stężycka, down to the Świętokrzyskie Mountains in central Poland in 1264 or 1282.

No wonder that the process of colonizing Ziemia Stężycka took a long time! It was only under the relatively peaceful rule of King Kazimierz Wielki [Casimir the Great] in the 2nd half of the 14th century, followed by the union between Poland and Lithuania in Krewo 1385, that a chance was given  for a greatly desired peace and relief from foreign assault.

The colonizing law (according to the so called raw root principle), which was endorsed by the reasonable kings Kazimierz Wielki and Władysław Jagiełło, consisted in appointing the zasadźca (major settler) who selected a group of determined people, ready to venture toward a basic life change. The colonizing law often exempted the land tenants from the rent-charge for many initial years (typically 20 years). This exemption, called in Old Polish wolnizna, has been preserved through centuries in the names of many Polish towns or villages like Wola Życka,  Wola Korycka, Gęsia Wólka czy Wola Zadybska.

It is not exactly sure when Kozice was settled, but we can presume (according to the statements of some historians like Klemens Kurzyp [4]) that it was the 14th century. One can guess that proximity to the river Okrzejka, providing people with fish and crawfish as well as the energy needed for milling the grain in the water-mills in valuable undergrowth—all of which promoted the settlement of this attractive place. We will most probably never know the name of the major settler. We may presume that he then became the first sołtys (village representative) and he must have left the legacy – the privilege called sołtystwo which has been mentioned in several old documents concerning Kozice.

Chapter IV

Kozice, along with the Polish state, experiences its ups and downs

As a result of a new administrative division of the Sandomierskie province in 1397, there was established Ziemia Stężycka  among some other administrative units, with Stężyca as a major stronghold.  To the north of Stężyca, there were only 6 settlements at that time including Kozice, Korytnica, Babice, Żelechów.

A Polish historian, Zdzisław Kaczmarczyk, who investigated the condition of the Polish villages in the 2nd half of the 14th century and in the 15th century is referenced by Paweł Jasienica. He noticed that Kaczmarczyk confirmed the relative affluence of the village inhabitants at that time, providing the examples of some peasants who owned 15 horses and 200 sheep [5]. The Polish peasants enjoyed a relatively wide margin of freedom, they could state their grievances to the royal court, for instance. Deplorably, their position experienced  gradual erosion through the 16th and 17th century.

Kozice was mentioned for the first time in a written document of the famous Bishop of Cracow, Zbigniew Oleśnicki in 1447. There was a note documenting the village under the name Koszicze, located in the parish Korytnica. In the records of the Radom district starost, issued in 1507 and 1523, Kozice along with Życzyn and Wola Życzyńska are mentioned as belonging to the royal property in Ziemia Stężycka.

The north-eastern part of Małopolska province, including Ziemia Stężycka, kept being more and more populated but the postion of the peasants in the end of the 16th century and in the beginning of the 17th century in general grew more and more difficult. The parliament session at the time of King Jan Olbracht resulted in tightening the rules for the right of a peasant to leave his village, and introduced a strict limitation that only one man would be allowed to leave the village in a year.  It was even more tightened by successive parliament bills by a provision that the villager leaving must have the consent of the local squire. The only exception from this strict rule was when a peasant’s daughter was about to be married with someone from the other village. In the successive pronouncement of the king Zygmunt Stary (Sigismund the Old), it was stated that the Royal Court’s right to rule the clash between the peasant and the lord was ceded to … the lord. Although in the royal and church properties, it was still possible appeal the verdict.  But, in general, the way of seeking justice became much more difficult. Another new law issued in 1520 stated that the peasants must work without being paid at least one day a week for each lan (ca. 17 hectares) of land they used unless they had had to work two days in a week. It was the introduction of infamous serfdom in Poland. This law was introduced to even out the difference between the rules existing in private, royal, and church properties but for the majority of peasants it  meant deterioration of their lives. In the private properties, the peasants had to work for two days a week even in the 16th century [5,vol.2, page 126].

This peasant hardship was alleviated by good, increasing prices of food up to a series of tragic 17th century wars which had decreased the demand for the Polish grain.

If we know anything about the location, about the economy and general position of thousands of Polish villages, it is possible chiefly due to the tax descriptions of the royal estates (Lustracje dóbr królewskich) which were described minutely beginning from the XVIth century at the wish of the kings trying to take in the finance of the Polish state. The detailed descriptions of the village communities, written in a  strange mixture of Old Polish and Latin,  are invaluable and often the only available source of information about the people of ancient settlements. Thanks to those handwritings, the communities lost their anonimity for the first time at the instance of modern state  representatives [6, str. 87]. According to the tax description of the Sandomierskie province prepared in 1564, Kozice was a big and prosperous settlement, being a part of Radom district and later Ziemia Stężycka. The village arable area was 12 lan (204 hectares, 510 acres), and it was inhabited by 37 peasants. The peasants were obliged to give 8 bushels of oats and a certain amount of eggs and chickens for the starost. They also paid a special tax (komiężne) probably connected with fishing on the rivers, lakes or ponds while using simple rafts made of tied timber logs.  The number of people was on sharp increase at that time; so that apart from the tenants keeping the whole land lan, there were 14 poor peasants called zagrodnicy who had just a little piece of land, a few  zagony (1 lan was equal to 30 zagony) around their huts or even people without any land, living only as hired-labor. One interesting thing serves as a confirmation of intensive people traffic – there were six(!) inns in the village, which were usually held by the Jewish settlers who, apart from the host service tax, paid the rent for tilling the adjacent soils [7].

Kozice-historia-obraz4

Fig 4. A map of Ziemia Stężycka (District of Stężyca in the 16th century)

In the meantime, the Polish Crown was fused with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania into one body politic – Rzeczpospolita (De Republika in Latin, Union of Lublin 1569). Still, it was not particularly significant for a tiny settlement buried in pine, birch or, sometimes, oak or ash forest.

According to the inventory of Ziemia Stężycka dated 15 December 1580, the properties of this district included, among others, Kozice with the water mill called Świstawka, Życzyn with two watermills and Wola Życzyńska [currently Wola Życka]. With the increasing number of incoming people in the surrounding of Stężyca, the administration also grew in numbers and structural complexity. In the 16th century, Kozice was joined to the tenancy of Ryki (Ryki used to be a village younger than Kozice, set up in the XVth century), which was assigned a status of tenuta i.e. a village type district. Życzyn in turn was granted a status of separate tenancy within the tenuta of Ryki and it included Kozice which enjoyed a special privilege of a having a village administrator (sołtystwo). The water mill Świstawka in Kozice was also included into this tenancy.

It is worth mentioning, that for ages, beginning from the governance of the Duke Bolesław Krzywousty [Boleslaw the Awry-Mouthed in the 12th century]  up to the 19th century, Ziemia Stężycka was not a part of the Mazovia province. It was a part of Sandomierskie province or even wider, to Małopolska region, with Cracow as a capital.  Małopolska extended even further north-east, up to Łuków district.

The 17th century was definitely not a thriving era for Rzeczpospolita and it was also not prosperous for Kozice and its surroundings.

Stężyca, the most prominent town in the neighborhood, was afflicted with a series of ill fortunes, gradually leading to its decline, which turned out to be irreversible and resulted in loss of the city law in the 19th century. In 1655, the Russian/Muscovy troops arrived in the town, along with the Cossacks led by the rebellion leader Bohdan Chmielnicki. They plundered the churches and the convent. In December of this year, the Swedish troops arrived as a part of the Sweden invasion on Rzeczpospolita (which was so brutal and prolonged that it was nicknamed “the deluge”). There were hard battles in the neighborhood. The Polish army tried to stop the invading Swedes, fighting them near Gołąb and in some other places. Not much later, in 1656/1657 the plague was raging in the town. In April 1657, Stężyca experienced a terrible attack of the united Swedish and Hungarian troops under the command of the savage Prince of Erdély (Transylvania), George II Rakoczi. The unspeakable barbarities, massacre and ravage took place in the Ziemia Stężycka and the Łuków District, Mazovia and Podlasie provinces. In the direct neighborhood of Kozice,  such calamity could not be escaped, of course. Paweł Jasienica gives such an account of these tough times in his famous essay: A captive who was just butchered could consider himself lucky, because the other ones were being burned slowly, they were cut with saws alive just because of searching for hidden precious stones. The rows of heads were hoisted on the wooden sticks by the roadsides in the Mazovia, Sandomierskie and Podlaskie provinces [10].

The extent of deterioration in Kozice is illustrated in another royal tax inspection for the Sandomierskie province, dated 14 March 1661, right after the Treaty of Oliwa 1660. The Treaty ended the extremely exhausting wars on the territories of Rzeczpospolita. In fact, the inspection of some neighboring villages like Życzyn or Babice gave even a gloomier picture of destruction and human losses. In the beginning of this document, the inspector recalled the previous inspection of 1564, where 12 lan of land was cultivated. Now, under oath, only 4 lan are under care, including one lan of the innkeeper.  There is no mention in this document about the number of peasants in Kozice. The village inhabitants paid the agreed upon rent to the tenant. They also had to provide  8 bushels of oats and 20 eggs and 8 chickens. Moreover, the peasants had the serfdom duties 3 days a week, having to lend their own beasts of draught (horses or yokes). They had extra caretaker duties and they had to supply 3 ells of textile fiber. Apart from regular peasants, 7 poor peasants, zagrodnicy lived in the village where there were 6 inns. Due to shortages during terrible, devastating war and plague, the human population experienced a significant drop, and even the innkeepers were employed in the folwark fields. Folwark was a serfdom-based farm and agricultural enterprise in Poland and then in Rzeczpospolita. In this document, there is a mention about the water-mill with two mill-wheels and one extra mill-wheel for driving the fullery, a device for woolen cloth manufacturing. The mills earned a nice profit for their owners or tenants; and they were a source of considerable tax revenues as well. By the way, it will be worth mentioning the sad consequence of eating the bread baked from the flour ground using the mill quern-stones; very hard, tiny particles detached from the stones was eaten with bread.  This damaged tooth enamel which caused many related problems, making a hard and short life even shorter.

While reading the royal tax reports, one can conclude that Kozice did not suffer as much as some other nearby villages like Wylezin where, before the war, there were 21 peasants cultivating 4 lan of land. The report noted:  “you will not notice a single soul, this village has been invaded and totally destroyed by the troops and the water-mill is not cared for” [9].

Moreover, the Lustracja of 1661 shows another deplorable thing, i.e., the increase of serfdom duties imposed on the peasants. They have been encouraged to fight the Swedes during the war.  In the middle of this war, the King himself, in front of the cathedral in Lwów, swore to improve their fate as a part of his famous Lwów Oath on April 1, 1656. Unfortunately, this promise was never fulfilled. On the contrary, the peasants who had been free people earlier, became de facto serfdom slaves.

At that time, the Życzyn tenancy was eventually deleted from the tenuta of Ryki. The inspector in 1661 applied a Latin expression a tenuta Rycensis avulsa in the introduction to his Kozice description. Kozice still was a part of  the Życzyn tenancy. Bernard Gozdzki, born in Gozd in the Radom district, a cup-bearer of the Sandomierskie province, was the tenant of this property in common with his wife Ewa of Korzenna.  Earlier, this tenancy was held by Grand Crown Chancellor Jerzy Ossoliński of Tęczyn in common with his wife Izabela Daniłowicz of Żurów. He was the same  famous Chancellor who made his way together with the King Jan Kazimierz to relieve a besieged Zbaraż fortress. He personally stepped half-way out to meet the envoy of the Tartar Khan Islam Girej III near Zborów, where the treaty was signed. The Chancellor Jerzy Ossoliński ceded the Życzyn tenancy, including Kozice to Bernard Gozdzki and his wife.

Kozice was contiguous to a private village Trojanów. A history of Trojanów which is as old as Kozice was different because this village was not included in the royal property. The first Trojanów owner was truly famous – Mikołaj Powała z Taczewa, bearing in the Ogończyk coat of arms, (Taczew or Taczów is a village near Radom) was an illustrious medieval knight, lavished  with properties and high posts by king Władysław Jagiełło. Powerful foundations, revealed several years ago during the restoration of the local mansion, lead us to believe that the knight or his predecessors built a defensive mansion here against the raids of possible aggressors. The mansion, the big folwark and the land around, were owned by various families. In the 2nd half of the 19th century, an elegant new mansion was erected in this place, resembling an irregular Italian villa, with a little tetragonal tower enabling observation of the scenic surroundings. After the 2nd World War,  the whole property was nationalized, and the mansion called the Palace by the locals was a seat for the public institutions like the administration office, the post office, and the medical center. After the major change of the political system in Poland in the nineties of last century, the building was abandoned and its condition deteriorated. In 2008, the local administration decided to offer it for sale; however, the provision was made that it will be restored to the previous condition. A new owner neatly carried out the restoration process concerning both the building and the area around; he remodeled it as a stylish hotel with the ladies’ preference, and it was opened for the guests in 2015 under the name Talaria Ladies Spa.

In the end of the 18th century, the water-mill in this village produced the flour for the whole Życzyn tenancy. The miller had to fatten four swine in a year which served as a tribute for the tenant.

In the consecutive tax inspection of the royal properties from 1789, there is much information on the Życzyn tenancy which included a cluster of villages: Życzyn, Wola Życzyńska, Podubłocie (the alias Basin was also used), and Kozice (formerly, the territory of this tenancy was considerably larger). The tenancy bookkeeping numbers show that the income of Kozice was twice as high as of Wola Życzyńska or Basin and slightly higher than of Życzyn. The accessible documents indicated that the tenancy was still held by the Gozdzki family in the 18th century – between 1770-1773 Stanisław Bernard Gozdzki of Doliwa’s coat of arms was the tenancy holder; then, it was transferred to the known aristocratic family member, famous traveller and a friend of King Stanisław Poniatowski, Prince Karol Henryk Mikołaj de Nassau and is wife Karolina, a daughter of  Bernard Gozdzki. Their tenancy was of a perpetual type, called emphyteusis, but it was still not full ownership. So, Kozice still enjoyed a status of royal property. It was not at all clear whether Kozice were a part of Ryki tenancy or Życzyn tenancy. This uncertainty is visible in the tax inspector’s notice concerning the investiture of sołtys and wybraniec for the Czechowski brothers [wybraniec, “the selected one,” a valuable status given to a person, exempting him from serfdom and granting him a piece of land in exchange for being ready to participate in a war as a soldier equipped at his own cost].

In 1686, the king Jan Sobieski declared a so called privilege sołtysowski, confirmed decades later by the next king, August II the Strong in 1720, and by King Stanisław August Poniatowski in 1780 for the successive 50 years. According to this privilege, the sołtys family was granted a patch of land; it was effective in populous villages like Kozice with the sołtystwo status. For decades, Czechowski family enjoyed this privilege combined with another investiture of being a wybraniec. In 1780, the Commission of the Royal Treasury signed an emphyteutic lease contract with the Czechowski brothers and, by virtue of that privilege, they were granted one lan  (42 acres, 17 hectares) of arable land for their service as soltys and wybraniec.

The 1789 tax inspection in the Sandomierskie province additionally provided indirect information concerning the administrative divisions. Korytnica, with the church, was the parish for the whole Życzyn tenancy, but opposite to other villages included in the tenancy.  A tithe (church tax) was directed to this parish while the tithe from the other villages was directed to the Gołąb parish. The Tithe was collected in the Kingdom of Poland until 1864. According to the royal inspector’s description, the water-mill Jagielski on the river Okrzejka was the eastern border of this tenancy while Kozice as a village was contiguous with the village Trojanów and Brzeziny, the counties of Ryki and Stężyca [12].

In the description of Kozice surroundings, the tenancy woods are mentioned. It can be concluded that, at the end of the 18th century, the original wilderness was considerably thinned out.  Although there was enough timber and wood for burning in the stoves, it was impossible to carry our massive wood felling for sale.

It is interesting that in the above-cited 1789 tax inspection, numerous matters at issue are documented– like the grievance of the Kozice inhabitants against the farmers of Trojanów–who for years and, even now, have breached their pasture lands.

Chapter V

The echo of a grand battle in nearby Maciejowice herald an era of a new dependence on Russia while for decades nothing is likely to change the old serfdom-affected reality

Most likely, the echo of a grand battle in Maciejowice reached nearby Kozice. The army of Teddy Kościuszko quartered in Korytnica. Unfortunately, the Polish soldiers, due to a Russian majority and the tactical mistakes, sustained bitter defeat which meant the end of independent Rzeczpospolita and its major component – the Crown of Poland in the first place.

Rzeczpospolita was definitely partitioned and grabbed by three powers: the Russian Empire, the Austrian Empire, and the Kingdom of Prussia.  Kozice, together with the whole Sandomierskie province and, in general, the whole Małopolska region, was annexed to the Austrian Empire. These territories were later liberated by the Napoleon Army and joined to the Duchy of Warsaw in 1809. In the wake of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 after Napoleon’s defeat,  Kozice and its neighborhood became part of the Kingdom of Poland, officially   an autonomous state linked with the Russian Empire by  a common monarch – the Russian tsar (the liberal tsar Aleksander Romanow) and the king of Poland at the same time, until 1825.

In 1826, an important change concerning the status of the royal properties took place. From January of this year, these properties adopted a new name: “National Land Properties.” They were owned by the Public Treasury for the Kingdom of Poland. In the subsequent years, these properties were sold to the nobles but, after overthrow of the November Uprising 1830-1831, the Russian Tsar donated them to the generals and officials who were, in his opinion, persons of merit. Such a donation was called the Majorat and it could be inherited later only by the eldest son in the family. The Majorat could not be sold; the aim of such donations was to strengthen the Russian land ownership in the Kingdom of Poland (there was less and less of Poland in this Kingdom; hence, the other name: Congress Kingdom). The Public Treasury for the Kingdom of Poland decided to sell the Życzyn property – including Kozice – to an aristocrat, Michał Hieronim Radziwiłł, the owner of a well-known property of Nieborów, bought by the Tsar’s money. Michał Radziwiłł infamously contributed to Poland’s partitioning but, at the same time, he was a good husbandman of his properties.

However, this important change was of secondary or no importance for poor inhabitants of Kozice who were rather confined in the village – here, they were born, they married, and they died. They could not effectively change their fate. The 19th century was a time of dynamic population increase, both for the Polish and the Jewish. The precious chronicle of that time entitled: “Słownik Geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego i Innych Krajów Słowiańskich”  [“Geographical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and other Slavic Countries”], published in Polish at the end of the 19th century in Russian Poland, gives valuable data on thousands of towns and villages including Kozice. In 1827, there were 53 houses and 281 inhabitants here; while in 1888, there were 50 houses and 383 inhabitants and a primary school. The area of arable land was large, 765 morgens (over 1000 acres, over 400 hectares) [17]. This data may be verified by the church records revealing numbers of births, marriages, and deaths in the parish of Korytnica. When studying this data written in Latin, in Polish, and in Russian, one’s heart  bleeds. Plain notes confirming the massive deaths of small children aged only days, months or a few years old (who usually died of mortal contagious diseases), women (who often died in the childbirth), and men (who typically died in field work or in the wood felling). A lot of second marriages of widows and widowers are visible in the records. The parents of those children or the witnesses confirming their deaths could not read or write (which was also recorded). They put just a symbolic cross as a signature substitute under the text. The houses, almost all wooden and thatched, were cramped and flammable. The agricultural machines were unknown so that the labor was just oppressive. When collecting the harvest, the peasants used simple tools like a scythe or a sickle for grain cutting. When cutting the firewood, the usual hatchet or the hand saw was used.

Paradoxically, the bitter defeat of the January Uprising fighters, 1863-1864, was topped off with the decree of the Russian Tsar Alexander II for the Congress Poland.  (In Russia, it took place a little earlier, in 186). This decree turned the serfs into husbandmen by exempting them from the generally hated serfdom. The peasants, who had only been the land users, were given the formal land ownership documents. One can imagine the excitement of the newfound enfranchised villagers – although their motherland was still waiting for freedom. The Życzyn tenancy, including Kozice, was several times sold to the new owners. In the 2nd half of the 19th century, it was owned by the Ostrowski family, powerful landowners. Later on, the Życzyn property became more and more fragmented and reduced after the serfs’ enfranchisement. In 1900-1920, this property was owned by the Gilewicz family; yet, without Kozice, it was the end of a longtime Życzyn property.

The turn of the 19th century must have been quiet for Kozice because I could not find any significant information in the available references about any dramatic circumstances in the neighborhood of Kozice. It was a poor village; a lot of people moved to more prosperous regions of Poland. Also, there was ongoing emigration to America which seemed like one was moving to paradise.

The building of the railway track from Warsaw to Lublin and Chełm was the undertaking of a particular financial and social importance. At the end of the 19th century, a railway station, “Życzyn,” was built and it was significant for the inhabitants of the local villages. The name of this station is surprising as it is located at considerable distance from the village Życzyn. According to the testimony of my much elder relative, the initial location of this station was near the river Okrzejka, much closer to the village. But, the technical and land availability problems led to the change of this location. At that time, the building permit, including the station name, had already been issued and there was no way to change it.

Chapter VI

The regained independence of the Polish state warms the heart but the old problems remain

The independence of Poland in 1918, after 123 years of foreign rule, was exciting, of course, but the old problems of everyday life did not vanish – overpopulation, very low level of mechanizing in agriculture, extending price scissors (low food prices with high prices of industrial products), and illiteracy posed a huge challenge. This time was marked with raising public awareness of people inhabiting Kozice. In 1932, the Volunteer Fire Brigade (VFB) activity had been initiated. and It was a much anticipated organization gathering young people who were ready to help in urgent need. The beginning was tough but, thanks to unusual commitment and generosity, the VFB grew in human and material resources. This worthy organization is vibrant up to now. Mikołaj Kozioł was the first chief and secretary of the VFB [13].

Mikołaj Kozioł was, first and foremost, the widely respected director of the primary school in Kozice. He ran the school chronicle and noted the primary school origin in Kozice. The school building was erected in 1870. The building materials were originally deposited in Trojanów, but there was no interest there in any further progress; so, the timber and other components were moved to Kozice. Thanks to the active effort of Jan Kostyra and some others from Kozice, the school building was erected in the village center. This wooden cabin stood without any improvement until 1913; then, it was renovated –roofed with the sheet iron, the walls were covered with planks but the internal class volume did not change. Kozioł presented profiles of the teachers, trying to evaluate them, beginning from the first teacher, Feliks Mikus, who was Polish–in spite of the fact that Kozice along with the whole guberniya of Siedlce belonged to the Russian ruled part of Poland [14].

Kozice-historia-obraz7

Fig. 7 One page from the school chronicle run by Mikołaj Kozioł.

The system of education painstakingly caught up with lost time. The fourgrade primary school, started during the Russian rule in Kozice several years after WWI, was run in the old method – yet surely as a Polish school. At the end of the twenties, the number of grades was increased to six. The parents who wanted their children to be taught in the seventh grade, sent them to other schools in Trojanów or in Życzyn. Children travelled there (4 kilometers, 2.5 miles) on foot which was hard, particularly in winter.

The school chronicle run by Mikołaj Kozioł is a valuable source of information not only about the activity connected with the school itself but also about other issues and troubles preoccupying the village community. Kozioł wrote about the housing problems and about scarce reconditioning funds. A lot of educational ideas must have been cut or discarded because young independent Poland struggled with the global economy crisis at the turn of the twenties. In spite of difficulties, the village community undertook some project supporting the selected farmers, e.g., one farmer per year was sent to the agricultural school in Miętne near the county town Garwolin.

In the period between the two World Wars, the Polish population was on the increase. According to the Census of 1921, there were 103 houses and 575 inhabitants in the village of Kozice, in the commune Trojanów. The women gave birth to the children in their houses, the babies being delivered by the experienced local midwives without any medical education, like centuries ago. The doctor appeared in the village in extremely rare cases. The number of students in the school in Kozice sometimes exceeded 200.

Moreover, Mikołaj Kozioł wrote about unusual weather patterns in the interwar period which was marked by extreme happenings. During February 10 to 19, 1929, teaching had to be suspended because of extreme freezing (-40 C, -40 F on February 10). A snow storm has raged for three days; the snow-drifts reached 4 m (4,5 yards) in height. On August 1930, a violent storm rolled over Kozice and the surroundings, destroying or damaging a lot of buildings, blowing down thousands of tress and killing people. In the nearby Trojanów, three girls were killed after a wooden barn was demolished.   In the period between May 1 and August 30, 1937, only four negligible rainfalls occurred, and the crops were catastrophically poor.

In the interwar period, there was the food products cooperative called Wygoda, uniting people interested in the promotion of food products. The social-political organization Wici, representing the village youth and uniting committed supporters of radical changes in Polish villages, put forward loud demands for social justice, while the competitive organization called Siew banded together wealthier and more conservative farmers. The public atmosphere in this poor region was far from satisfactory. The  government was harshly criticized as  blind to extreme poverty and meager future chances for the children born in the village.

In fact, life was hard. Children born in big families often suffered hunger in spring. They were running bow-legged on the dirt roads. (Theirs was a condition of – a typical disease of the poor.) They frequently died of contagious diseases.

The food prices were low, and it was difficult to sell the products.  So, it often happened that in order to sell 5 dozen eggs, the women of Kozice had to get up at dawn to travel 15 kilometers (9,5 miles) on foot to the Thursday fair in Ryki with baskets full of eggs – hopefully selling them all before going  back home another 15 kilometers on foot.

Plenty of products – which are nowadays available in shops – were produced locally, e.g., linen, clothes, vegetable oil (produced from rape grains pressed in special wooden presses with iron inserts), and butter and cream were produced from milk. Flour was ground in numerous water- or wind-mills in the neighborhood, and bread was usually baked in the home kitchen stoves. The staples like sugar, which are cheap now, used to be very expensive. So, honey was a common substitute for sugar. Cellars were in common use for food preservation because there were no refrigerators, yet.

A lot of people did not even know what an automobile was. Wooden carts, often with wooden wheels with an iron band on the periphery and driven by horses, were in common use for transport. The bicycle was a notable rarity and luxury before the war.

Just before the war, a significant novelty appeared in the neighborhood of Kozice –electric current. The electricity in Kozice was installed in the middle of war; the installation began in December 1943, according to the school chronicle by Mikołaj Kozioł. The war left its influence on village life – a local guerilla group was set up as a part of the Underground State. The local fighters, acting in tight conspiracy, were joined to a larger detachment in nearby Więcków. There were various guerilla groups of different political shade, sometimes fighting each other. Beginning in 1943, when the German Nazis had to retreat under the enormous pressure of the Russian Red Army, the local fighters arranged more and more bold diversionary and patriotic actions. The bridge on the river Okrzejka near the railway station Życzyn was blown up a few times. “Patriotic” Holy Masses were organized in the nearby woods, and the fighters even dared entering churches during Holy Mass, in order to indicate the existence of the underground structures and to convince the locals that the German occupation is was just temporary. The renowned leader of the local fighters, Marcin Bernaciak – alias “Orlik,” enjoyed general fame in Ziemia Stężycka during the war and after the war he continued his fight against the Soviet dominance in Poland. He was betrayed and, then, shot by the communists in June 1946 in the fields of Piotrówek bordering on Kozice. (There were rumors circulating around that he was fast enough to kill himself). One can easily find a cross there memorializing his death. His body was taken by the troops, and his burial place is still unknown.

Chapter VII

The postwar reality brings gradual improvement in people’s lives and it is much accelerated at the end of the millennium

A new Poland, now called Polish People’s Republic, considerably influenced the life of people inhabiting Kozice along with thousands of towns and villages in Poland. Some guerillas fighting the Nazis were now considered the enemies of the communist state and they were subjected to repressive measures. Some others worked their way up with lightning speed by serving the new powers, and power at that time was to be picked as easily as a flower from street lawns. The poorest citizens…or, inhabitants gained a much desired piece of arable land through the agricultural reform law; while the rich ones were obliged to deliver grain supplies at a very low price to the state grain elevators. The Soviet-style attempt of the village collectivization in the fifties was so much opposed by the peasants that government took a step back, at last. Simple radio receivers called kolkhoz radios appeared in houses. The radio signal was transmitted from the wire broadcasting center.

The villagers of Kozice pursued their lives as if nothing major happened.  They curiously observed  neighboring Trojanów where the prewar property – including powerful manorial buildings and the splendid mansion called palace by the locals (once owned by Ordęga family) was turned into the Soviet-style State Agricultural Farm,  promoted by a new power. The farmers living in Kozice worked hard manually from dawn till dusk, almost without the assistance of the agricultural machines until the seventies. They faithfully celebrated the traditional church holidays, the harvest home festival and the Firemen’s Day. Some significant village investments were made gratuitously by the people of Kozice, like the new primary school building in the sixties or the small passenger train station building in nearby Mika in the beginning of the seventies. In 2015 the school was closed; the children and the teachers were moved to much bigger school in Życzyn. The decision to discontinue teaching in Kozice was surely difficult – there were only a few students in Kozice which made the cost of education high while education at a larger school could be more effective.  A larger school had many specialized teachers and expensive, high-quality equipment. The children did not have to go to school on foot like before the war; they were  picked up by a school bus. The current primary school building in Kozice now welcomes new children – the private infant school was set up here and it is presently the only such institution in the commune of Trojanów. The infant school is supported by the local administration and it is much appreciated by the parents. At the moment, another building is under construction in Trojanów and it will be occupied by the public kindergarten and nursery.

After the war, the farmers still widely used the scythe for cutting grain or grass, and women still washed the linens and clothes in the river by placing the items on a large stone and hitting them over and over with a simple wooden tool called battledore. A hoe was used extensively for moving the ground in search of potatoes; a sound of thrashing could be often heard in the village barns. Until the seventies, most of the houses were made of wood and they were thatch-roofed.

A curious specificity of village life was the local way of speaking in Ziemia Stężycka, a heritage of  former generations, without any written documentation. The Warsaw citizen arriving in Kozice enjoyed hearing this melodious tongue when almost all the words were understandable –  though they sounded different, as if in a softer tone. Here are a few typical samples: instead of ‘a jakże’ one could hear  ‘a juści’, instead of ‘stała’ – ‘stojała’, instead of ‘chyba’-‘musi’, instead of ‘skwareczki’ – ‘skworecki’, instead of ‘chodź no’ – ‘chodzino’, instead of ‘oni mówili’ – ‘łuny mówiły’, instead of ‘pokaż’ – ‘pokos’, instead of ‘piach’ – ‘pjoch’. Scientific investigations into the local dialects in Poland were carried out. Their  findings were published by reputable editors. Professor Stefan Warchoł described in detail the dialects used in the borderland between Mazovia and Malopolska. These dialects were spoken not only in Ziemia Stężycka but also on the other side of Wisla in the neighborhood of Radom and even on the other side of Pilica [15,16]. What a pity that this particular type of ancient heritage disappeared to the advantage of a nation-wide language being spoken over the radio and TV. I consider myself lucky to be able to record my conversations with my elderly aunt living near Kozice, speaking that way, and I regard this recording so precious because that speech is disappearing with lightning speed under our eyes. It is not by accident that the languages of Poland’s neighbors – Czechs, Slovaks, Ukrainians, White Russians and Russians are much similar but, at the same time, so different one from another.  In one respect, all those languages were derived from the same Slavic stem while, on the other hand, the speech was strongly connected with the environment where people grew up and lived usually their whole life.

In 1964, Kozice was inhabited by 489 persons and, six years later, by 443 persons in 110 households. In 2004 this number shrank to 403 persons. Year by year, young people kept making a decision to leave the village and look for an opportunity in the city. It was sometimes a drama of old husbandmen who could not hand over  their once so precious, dear land to anyone in the family.

At that time, arable land could not be an object of free market trade. Land ownership was not fully legally sanctioned, and the farmer operating on his own land could not give it or sell it to his brother living in the city. Only the far-reaching government system change in 1990 ensured land property for the farmers though there were still some restrictions concerning free trade of woods, fields, pasture or arable lands.

One of the positive changes for the village inhabitants in Poland was the introduction of medical and retirement insurance for all the farmers. The access to medical services improved but, at the same time, the level of the retail trade and all kinds of petty services were deplorable – one could not buy much in shops in Kozice. It was near to impossible to buy the agricultural goods which were produced on site like potatoes, vegetables or meat.  To purchase building materials, villagers really had to hunt for such scare materials.

A special word: chłopo-robotnik was coined for a member of a group of people who combined agricultural activity and their job in the city with various proportions and configurations. It was surely induced by real financial needs and was often definitely profitable; yet, sometimes it engendered sick social behavior.

The eighties, which were so tough for the cities in Poland, turned out advantageous for the rural areas. Marshal law declared in December 1981 and binding till July 1983 wrecked hopes for a better ruled, democratic Polish state. Yet, in Kozice many brick houses and farm buildings were erected. Substantial state donations for food products enabled development of small farms. Fertilizers ceased from being just a novelty and were in common use; then, specialized farms were set up.

The winds of expectation for major, breaking political and social changes swept through the country. Determined persons going abroad for work, usually to Western Europe, returned with surprisingly thick wallets. They compared Poland’s socialist political system, nowadays called communist, with the capitalist one that made out well in market economy, asking themselves why Poland was lagging behind those developed European countries.

Kozice-historia-obraz8

Fig. 8. A tourist arriving in Kozice could only but admire the natural beauty of places like the one presented in this picture where he will be offered a lot of attractions.

In 1989, in the wake of the rulers historic Round Table talks with the opposition and the first postwar parliamentary elections that were somewhat free, Poland was at last given a real chance for a radical change of course for the future. The present shows that the chance was well used, and the course is definitely right.

The significant year 1989 as well as successive years were used to implement a basic transformation in  agriculture and industry . Those years were difficult for the farmers who confronted – for the first time – the reality of a market economy. Many of them gave up, abandoned land cultivation and animal husbandry. Others, bold and educated, enlarged their farms and made good use of the economic boom. The communist style ‘folwark’ known as the PGR (State Agicultural Farm), which had been set up in Trojanów after the war, went bankrupt because the cost of food production was higher than the earned income.

In the beginning of a new millennium, the recently adopted changes were initiated due to Poland’s admission into the European Union. Domestic agriculture was given a new chance to participate in the attractive West European markets. Farmers cultivating more than 1 hectare (2,5 acres ) of land won the agricultural subsidies funded predominantly from the European Union budget. The subsides were quite important in improving the profitability of agricultural production; yet, a significant share of the arable land was not cultivated and was overgrown with weeds, bushes, and even trees. The hopes set on the subsides were not fully realized because the lands’ patches were still broken, and the development of large farms for high production volume proceeded with significant difficulties. The admission of Poland into the European Union on May 1, 2004 along with 9 other European countries resulted in attaining the valuable privilege of financial support for the projects in the rural regions like deep water intakes, water supply networks,  sewage networks, or significant improvements in local traffic roads. The dramatic improvement in rural infrastructure became an impetus for the development of many processing plants, for the units involved in services and trading, or for traditional farms’ rearrangement into attractive agro tourism farms. Many old and decrepit mansions were restored to their original beauty. Some of them were remodeled into stylish hotels like the Talaria Ladies’ Spa in Trojanów. Thirty years ago a tourist arriving in Kozice could only admire the natural beauty of the surroundings, enjoying the starry nights full of fragrance and nightingale tunes; however, there was nothing at all to offer a tourist. Now, tourists have elegant restaurants at their disposal, good new hotels by the roadsides, shops with shelves bending under the weight of various goods. There are newly developed beaches and a recreation center on  the Wisla in Stężyca.  Also, there’s even an amusement park Farma Iluzji (Illusion Farm) located in a once backwater settlement, Mościska, in the middle of pine woods growing on infertile sandy soils. The park is just 7 km (4,5 mile) away from Kozice and is well known to many Warsaw children. It is more and more difficult to find an old dirt road in the surrounding area because most of the roads are new with a good quality asphalt surface. The bridges on the river Okrzejka are one by one being rebuilt or built anew as much stronger structures.

A little but well stocked village shop appeared in Kozice twenty years ago as a replacement of a former poorly stocked shop. It was named “Patrycja.” Friendly shoppers helped by buying a range of useful staples – not just food. It is a pity that this shop was closed due to various reasons – probably including the economic pressure from the stronger shops in the neighborhood. To wipe away tears, the locals were offered something unimaginable in the communist Poland – a shop in an automobile (the company’s name is something like ABC on the wheels) which travels around the village on two or three days a week, stopping on request. This may be summed up according to the old saying: “if Mohammed will not go to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohammed”.

The traditional gulf separating cities and villages is narrowing fast. A person visiting Kozice will easily observe many new houses equipped with modern installations like in the city. Kozice is well linked with Warsaw and Lublin. In 2020, an impressive highway in the south of Warsaw was built as a part of the Warsaw Ring. It is now connected to another highway linking Warsaw and Lublin, with more distant destinations to be joined soon. Trojanów is on the way as one of the traffic cords and, as a result, one can get to Kozice from Warsaw in just one hour. The passengers travelling by train have their own reason to be satisfied. In 2020, a railway track between Warsaw and Lublin was modernized to the degree that it was virtually torn down and rebuilt. Now, both the express and passenger trains offer shorter times of travel and much more comfort. Passenger trains stop at a little train station Mika, also subjected to a recent renovation, at a distance of just 2,5 km (1,5 mile) from Kozice.

Little towns in the vicinity of Kozice like Dęblin, Ryki or Żelechów offer plenty of opportunity for shopping,  inviting visitors to stylish shops.  But, the traditional town fair is always in vogue. A beautiful, spacious building with three swimming pools was opened to the public in 2013 in the county town Ryki. It was built with a major contribution of European Union funding. The entry fee is much less expensive than in similar places in Warsaw, and they attempt to make use of a range of numerous attractions.

The 20th and 21st centuries are marked with unprecedented technological development based on up-to-date electronics and on computers linked by the worldwide web system – the Internet. Moreover, it is a time of mass motor transport, and the rural areas benefit from it as well. Sixty years back, at the time of Sunday Holy Mass, one could easily have observed many horses harnessed to the carts, standing in front of the church. Now there are plenty of cars standing there and some of them have to be parked at quite a distance from the church door. The world is galloping…

As hard as it is to start a history of a small dot on the globe, a similar problem is encountered at the end of the story because I have in mind that every day brings a new happening. Now, as I near the end of my story, Poland and the whole world is trying to fight a dangerous pandemic, a global epidemic induced by a tricky virus which, for some patients, causes a fatal pneumonia. For most of the infected persons, the symptoms are mild or there are no symptoms at all. Still, the doctors say that such persons may be diagnosed with later lung or some other organ damage. Fortunately, the vaccines have been invented and produced which ensure effective prevention against being infected. In spite of this good news, one cannot state definitely that the battle with the deceitful virus has been won.

Around a hundred years ago, the world experienced a similar pandemic called Spanish flu, which resulted in infecting every third human of our globe. It brought about 50 million deaths. In the woods behind the river Okrzejka, near the road leading to parish church in Korytnica, one can see a carefully made stone monument crowned with a cross where one can read the engraved date 1917. People say it was erected to memorize the victims of a terrible plague.

I would like to complete my story with the optimistic message – the long seven hundred years of Kozice were marked with various dramas and history turns. The dominant, general direction of our current life’s journey is supposed to lead us people to definite improvement of longevity and in the quality of our life. Nowadays, we possess much more than our poor ancestors could even dream of, and their dreams must have been simple: having enough to eat every day, wearing something for protecting them from the cold and rain, living safely under a roof all their life. Therefore, let us look back with kind-hearted understanding at the efforts of the past generations and their simple dreams of personal and family happiness. We are an incredible blend of genes—after 250 years or ten generations, i.e., 2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2=210=1024 persons shaped our genes. After 500 years, it would be 1024*1024. After 700 years, it yields an unimaginable number equal to 1024*1024*256, so that after 700 years, over 256 million persons shaped our inclinations, personalities, strengths, or talents. Now, is it surprising that we cannot understand ourselves sometimes?

Zagadka dotycząca wsi KOZICE – najstarszy obiekt we wsi

Who could name the oldest structure in Kozice? I acquired information in this matter and I am presenting a wintertime picture of this somewhat mysterious place.                                             ZbyszekKozice-modrzewiowy krzyż

Epilog – Epilogue

Epilog
I znów niosła tę parę ku górze pieśń radosna, pełna nadziei i serce krzepiąca.
Okrzejka ma dwa miejsca o historycznym znaczeniu. U źródeł jej zaledwie siedemdziesięciokilometrowego biegu leży ładnie położona podlaska wieś Wola Okrzejska, gdzie urodził się i wychował największy według mnie heros naszej prozy – Henryk Sienkiewicz piszący ‘ku pokrzepieniu serc’.

Epilogue

Just eight years later, in August 1952, young Gene stopped in the very center of the same church, but this time the other song ruled under the arched vault. This time, it was joyful Mendelssohn wedding march. Again, Gene begged God, yet this time not for freedom but  to be able bear sweet captivity. This time he had another company at his side – pretty and so young girl from Warsaw, with city background, but she and her family also suffered much in this terrible war. Again, song of hope and joy carried the young couple up to the sky.

The river Okrzejka offers two historically significant spots. At the source of its 50 miles long course, a scenic village is placed, called Wola Okrzejska where Henryk Sienkiewicz was born. Sienkiewcz is regarded by  many of Poles including me the  greatest Polish novelist writing his famous books “for hearts strengthening” at times which were difficult for a country that was erased from the world map. Okrzejka completes its short course giving its swift waters to Visla in Maciejowice where the Polish insurgents lead by Teddy Kościuszko were defeated by the Russian army commanded by the cunning general Fersen in 1794 and this unhappy fight had disastrous consequence for the fate of Poland.

The neighborhood illustrated  in this short description undoubtedly witnessed numerous dramatic events in the past centuries. The mute witnesses – powerful oaks, willows by the roads, rustling pines,  birches wooing with the whiteness of their cracked bark and alders on the river could say much about the past while… the sun shines as always, birds sing and fields of corn become golden every summer, Okrzejka rolls its water to Visla as if nothing particular happened. It is still a wonderful place of dreamy peace, innocent harmony.

I do love this neighborhood and I think that if the accumulated ardent power of all past generations could be miraculously focused in one place, at the same time, we could have a little local sun for cool days and nights.

Ojczyzna tych, którzy zostali w kościele odmaszerowała do lasu. I niosły ludzi słowa pieśni błagalnej do domów krzepiąc serca spragnione ludzkiej normalności.

KONIEC

(6/6)

…and their Lord gave them back their ancient land, populated and settled since Middle Ages, beginning from the old local stronghold Stężyca on river Visla, the land so dear, so  much longed-for.

After the last song tones resounded, the silence ruled for a while, interrupted only by the sighs of the village women,  deep as wells made of stones. Then, the detachment commander gave final commands: “shoulder arms”, “about face”, “forward march” and the guerrillas came out, clattering with their shoes on the way, disappearing quickly.

Fatherland of those who stayed in the church, marched forward to the wood.  Not for long, though and people were not the same as before this Sunday morning. They proudly walked with their heads higher somehow, anew they gathered hope, they listened to spring-time promises of swallows, larks and nightingales.

These flying creatures, probably the most free animals in the world announce freedom to the land as naturally as if nothing had happened, acting disobligingly against the bullets, the bombs and the guns. And the words of famous invocation carried people home, strengthening their hearts calling for simple human normalcy.

Twenty years old Genek, born and raised in the scenic village on the river Okrzejka was one of those young boys commanded by Zagonczyk, standing in the very middle of the church and singing famous invocation, with melody composed by Jean Pierre Solie and the lyrics by Alojzy Feliński in 1816, surprisingly, in honor to a Russian czar Alexander. Later on, it turned into patriotic hymn and was recommended as a Polish national song.

THE END

Kulminacja (5/6) – Culmination (5/6)

(5/6)

I zaczęli….
BOŻE, COŚ POLSKĘ PRZEZ TAK LICZNE WIEKI
OTACZAŁ BLASKIEM POTĘGI I CHWAŁY…
Ludzie oniemieli.

Clatter of the soldiers’ shoes  filled the church interior.  People, taken aback, swiftly stepped aside and the ‘men of the wood’ stopped in the very center of the church, just under the highest point of the arched vault. The commander kept giving successive commands: ‘Present arms’, ‘prepare for  singing’. And they  started to sing loudly…  „BOŻE, COŚ POLSKĘ PRZEZ TAK LICZNE WIEKI OTACZAŁ BLASKIEM POTĘGI I CHWAŁY…” [a particularly significant patriotic hymn and invocation for God, sung solemnly, with much emotion].

People stood speechless, absolutely dumbfounded. Had Jesus manifested himself in the church, there could not have been more stupefaction. Now and here, in the middle of the turmoil of war, of German ruling, the Polish soldiers stand and sing in the church. Oh, Jesus, Our Lady, is it truly happening???

The violent weeping,  the sobs deep down the tormented hearts swept people. They stood now, under the face of God, airing their series of complaints of humiliation, wrongs and enormous suffering . Firstly, the village women and girls produced spasms of sobs but later even tough male hearts surrendered, a wave of grief kept rising and at one point it overfilled and tears flew widely like water over the banks of Okrzejka during the springtime thaw.

And the whole church rocked and rose giving place for this powerful portion of energy which could trample any obstacle if found on its way. And then they all, along with the soldiers,  continued with the invocation of this messiah nation , partly singing painfully or rather sobbing and uttering words : „Ojczyznę wolną racz nam zwrócić, Panie”. “Fatherland, freedom, please give them back to us, o Lord!

[First verse of this patriotic song went like:

God! Thou surrounded Poland for so many centuries

With the grandeur of might and glory,

And with the shield of Your almighty protection

From ill fortunes that were to oppress her.

(refrain:)

Before Your altars we carry our imploration:

Fatherland, freedom, please give them back to us, o Lord!]

Przed kulminacją (4/6) – Prior to Culmination (4/6)

(4/6)

Wszystko starannie zaplanowano i przygotowano. Ksiądz proboszcz Grzeszko po długim wahaniu wyraził zgodę. Ruszono…

Żołnierze Podziemnego Państwa dzwoniąc żabkami zelówek ruszyli i wkroczyli energicznie do kościoła.

Prior to Culmination (4/6)

In spring 1944, the detachments  of the underground Home Army being a part of the concentration active in the neighborhood of a little town Ryki, under command of famed Orlik, carried out a lot of actions which were aimed at convincing the Nazi German invaders that period of their rule comes inevitably to an end.  The planned action of the detachment commanded by Zagonczyk (pseudonym) could never be arbitrary. Every detail has been carefully planned and prepared. The parish-priest Grzeszko gave his acceptance, not without hesitation. The underground soldiers took their move…

At dawn, the front guards carefully checked the marching route stretching from the river to a parish village Korytnica and then they reported that the area is “clean”.

In the church, the Sunday morning mass service has been continued. The oppressed people asked the God  with a heavy heart  for bringing an end to the bandit-like occupation . People still had in fresh memory an appalling massacre of the local Jewish community living in nearby Zelechow, when they were herded in an inhuman way and drove along a road to Sobolew, being murdered frequently on the way, including mothers and their new-born babies kept at their breasts. Here and there, the individual peasant farms were set on fire as a revenge for would-be or real activities of those who were labeled  Polnische banditen by the Nazis.

In the morning, the detachment reached the direct church neighborhood. Then, commander ordered the instant change of fighters’ clothes to a “full dress” (the all-embracing poverty of that hard time meant that if the gun was hanging not on the string but on the thong or there were any shoes, preferably with the iron sole segments, then an individual was called “full dressed”).

The commander exclaimed  successive commands “right turn in four”! “slope arms”! and “forward march”! The Soldiers of the Underground Army took a move clinging with the iron soles and they vigorously entered the church.

In the year 1942, mysterious trains rolled from the Eastern front passing the iron bridge construction on the river Okrzejka. The tightly drawn windows curtains hidden something which the locals  spoke about as German soldiers with the hard frost-bitten limbs, noses, ears.

“It serves them right!” – rejoiced the local peasants. Yet, the leadership of the underground Home Army were reluctant to expose their staff to overly risk. It was obvious that they have been earnestly waiting for a suitable moment because the enemy was still powerful and the nation bleeding would be too expensive at that time.

Still, the commanders realized that driving hundreds  of fighting-hungry young village boys to undertake actions against the Nazis was a top priority. Famous  “Orlik” (pseudonym), a local commander of the local bush-and-forest guerilla bands have discussed  for hours  with the other commanders over how to balance the minimum risk principle with the urgent need to demonstrate their presence in the parish area. The debates were hot, loaded with anger and hardly choked rage of people degraded, humiliated, soiled by the then five years long already German occupation. In the end, someone threw apparently crazy idea of a song imprisoned in newly built impressive large church, erected by a superhuman effort of a poor parish village community.

Z frontu dochodziły coraz to nowe wieści o przewagach Sowietów. Żandarmi i urzędnicy Trzeciej Rzeszy – niepodzielni dotąd władcy połowy Europy, w tym malowniczych okolic nad Okrzejką, czuli się coraz bardziej podskubywani i osaczani.

The monotony of the Mazovian planes was diverted by the morena heights which were wound by the web of dirt roads leading to the individual farms hidden in the wood or the terrain depressions. The spring of the memorable year 1944 resembled the famous, unusual spring of the year 1812, famed by the genius Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz in his national bible entitled Pan Tadeus:

„O Spring! Who had then witnessed you walk through our fields, Spring of war unforgotten, spring of bounteous yields!„.

The local leadership of the underground Home Army had their work cut out for them . One could sense special air of agitation, excitement resulting from some unusual and dangerous events. The news kept arriving from the battlefront about the Soviet advantage against the Germans. Gendarmes and officials of the Third German Reich – quite recently undisputable rulers of the half of European continent including scenic surroundings of the river Okrzejka, now experienced uneasy encirclement and plucking like a fowl.

Little charms of Kozice – Smaczki Kozic

In the end of January 2017, I made another trip to Kozice from Warsaw on the bike in train. The weather was excellent and it helped me to show you some little charms of the neighborhood of a village.

Wystarczyłby jeden kapuś i okoliczne wioski mogłyby popaść w duże tarapaty. Wszyscy pamiętali jaki los spotkał rodzinę Grzybków [nazwisko zmienione] zamieszkałych w gospodarstwie nad rzeką, kiedy Niemcy uzyskali poufną informację, że syn gospodarza chodzi do leśnych.
Okolica, malowniczo położona nad rzeczką Okrzejką, oferowała sielskie krajobrazy – wonne lasy z przewagą szumiących sosen, wśród których jednak wcinały się brzozowe zagajniki i rozpierały potężne dęby; rozległe łąki nad rzeką, jeszcze nie znające pojęcia „melioracja”, pełne były rozmaitego kwiecia; liczne młyny wzdłuż biegu rzeczki uzupełniały ów senny pejzaż z okolicznymi rozlewiskami pełnymi  ryb wszelakich, raków i żab – wszystko to stwarzało złudzenie sennego spokoju, niewinnej harmonii.

The priest was wary about the projected spectacular and dangerous local guerilla action. One servile informer would be enough for a dramatic trouble of the village residents.  Everyone had in mind the fate of the Grzybek family [family name changed]  inhabiting the farm on the river, when the Germans got the confident information about the owner’s  son allegedly contacting the “men of the wood” (guerilla). The parish was broad but not rich, it was just a typical parish in central Poland. The place, offering scenic landscape centered upon a little river called Okrzejka, was a lovely location with fragrant forest of the definite pine majority, whereas here or there one could encounter the birch scrubs or powerful individual oaks;  spacious natural meadows on the river bank which knew nothing like  the land reclamation, produced charming ocean of bloom; frequent grinding-mills down the river added to the serene landscape along with the river overflow-arms full of the fish, crayfish and frogs – all the components contributed to a false image of dreamy peace, innocent harmony.
